26 Letters and Trillion Opportunities
It sometimes amazes me how simple things lead to larger things.
For example, English language has only 26 letters, but with the combination of 26 letters, you can create approximately 6 lakh words.
Now it gets even better, these 6 lakh words can be combined in various forms to produce infinite number of phrases that we marketers call “keywords”.
A keyword is essentially same as the text you enter in search engine’s search box. Each meaningful keyword/key phrase will have potential searchers waiting on search engines. Depending on the demand of the keywords, you will have more websites competing for that term. That means a simple keyword such as ‘shopping’ can have billions of competing websites.
As a digital marketer, we will target low competition keywords first. These keywords are easier to rank. Low competition also means longer keywords/key phrases. Once we get hold of important ranks for these 3+ worded terms, we will start working on lesser worded terms. This process continues until we attain good ranks for all the important terms.
So How 26 Letters Become Trillion Opportunities?

To explain this, we have to do some math.
Let us assume there are only 10000 meaningful (Safe assumption right?), easy to use words.
If you are a regular Googler, you will agree with me that most of our search terms are around 3-5 words long. We rarely use 2 or one word search terms.
So let us calculate how many 3 word terms we can create from the meaningful set of 10000 words.
C(10000,3) = 10000 * 9999 * 9998 / 1* 2 *3 = 999,700,020,000 ~ approximately 1 Trillion combinations.
The variations will run in to quintillion (10^18) if we are choosing 5 worded terms. It goes higher if we are selecting longer tail key phrases.
Please note that we used combinations here for simplicity. In reality, Googlers are permuting words. (For example, ‘London affordable hotel’ & ‘affordable hotel London’ are different.)
Now consider these additions: places, people, gadgets, news etc can be combined with the above set of keywords to produce even larger number of keywords.
That means, you have an opportunity to create pages for at least trillion keywords. Each of these pages can be monetized by selling ads, services or products relevant to that term. Sometimes all three!
Now you realize you are in front of a gold mine where anything is possible. As long as more and more users are coming on to the internet and start using search engines, you will have endless supply of keywords.
So what page are you creating next?
PS: Even Google do not know how many unique pages they have in their index.
